Kimamuenho — Rural Intellectual 1913-1922
According to the Portuguese-Kimbundu Dictionary by José Pereira do Nascimento (1906) and the Kimbundu-Portuguese Dictionary by António Assis Júnior, "Kima" means a strange thing or an unknown end, mystery, while "muenho" means "soul," "spiritual" force, existence, life. Therefore, "Kimamuenho" would mean "mysterious" or "strange soul" and was one of the pseudonyms chosen by Custódio Dias Bento de Azevedo to sign his writings (1918–22). This was particularly during the wave of monopolizations in the Dande region, in the hinterland of Luanda, between June 28 and December 1920. The author himself stated that the expression was meant to symbolize that "to build, one must have life," and the texts signed with this pseudonym were those that, as a "public writer," he considered his most cherished works.
