Álvaro Henriques do Vale

Born in Lisbon, he has worked as an economics journalist since 1985. He was a staff writer for the weekly newspaper Tempo (Tempo Económico), deputy editor of Vida Empresarial, and deputy editor of Tempo Internacional. He later worked for EXAME magazine and, in 1992, joined the Economics desk of the LUSA news agency, from which he retired in 2018.

He studied Information and Communication Sciences at the Portuguese Catholic University (UCP) and attended postgraduate-level courses in Geology and Archaeology at the Autonomous University of Lisbon (UAL), as well as in Arab and Islamic Studies at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon. In 1989, under the supervision of Professor Jorge Borges de Macedo, he presented his final dissertation on The Speed of News, Contemporaneity and Public Opinion: From the English Civil War to the Present Day.

A researcher in economic and diplomatic history, he is the author of As Contas da República (1919–29) e os Anos Loucos de Wall Street [The Republic’s Accounts (1919–29) and the Roaring Years of Wall Street], published by Perfil Criativo | AUTORES.club in 2020, and Do Mapa Cor-de-Rosa à Europa dos Estado Novo — Diplomacias, macroeconomia… e ainda o colonato judaico para Angola [From the Pink Map to the Europe of the Estado Novo — Diplomacy, Macroeconomics… and the Jewish Settlement Project for Angola], published by Chiado in 2015.

He began his journalistic career in 1975 at República and contributed to Diário Popular, as well as to the Lisbon bureaux of O Primeiro de Janeiro, Jornal de Notícias, and Comércio do Porto. From 2010 to 2020, he was responsible for the digital magazine Correio dos Vinhos.
