In 1724, the island of Santo Antão was leased by its donatary to English marketers for a period of 27 years. The Portuguese Crown would later denounce the contract signed between the donatary and the said marketers, for fear of the occupation of the island, as well as the neighboring island of S. Vicente, by the English. These two islands could play the same role that the island of Santiago so efficiently played in the globalization of the world, endangering the interests of the Portuguese.
